ACTIVITY #5 – “In Search Of Spiritual Growth”

(This activity involves two different parts. First, read the paragraph listed in Part 1 and then answer the questions below. For Part 2, read the information printed and then follow the instructions to pray for spiritual renewal and revival in your church, your Sunday school and in your own life.)

PART 1 – “The Importance of Spiritual Renewal”

Unless your members are truly committed to Jesus Christ and to following Him, learning about Him and doing His will, your Sunday school will never be all that it could be. That’s why it’s so important to do all that you can to bring about spiritual renewal within your congregation. But, how can you do it? You might sponsor a special spiritual renewal or revival service, a spiritual renewal Bible study, ask your pastor to preach a series of sermons on spiritual commitment, etc. It’s also important to remind individuals and families of the importance of personal and family devotions with Bible reading and prayer.

1.Do you see the need for spiritual renewal within your church or Sunday school? Why?

2.What have you done within your church during the past year to encourage spiritual renewal and growth?

3.Search the Scriptures: Find three different Bible verses that speak to us about our responsibility to give Jesus Christ first priority in our life.

4.Do you agree that persons who are not fully committed to Jesus Christ will not be really committed to reading and studying the Bible? Will they really care about the spiritual condition of others? Will they really care about Sunday school? Why?

5.What specific things might you do to encourage spiritual renewal and revival within your church? Within your Sunday school? Within your Sunday school class? Within your family? In your own personal life?

PART 2 – “What Do Those Excuses Really Mean?”

When asked why they don’t attend Sunday school, people often respond with answers like, “Sunday is my day to sleep in” or “We’re going to the lake for the weekend” or “I’m playing golf on Sunday morning.” These might sound like good excuses to the people who are saying them, but what are they really saying? They’re saying that they have other priorities. To them, sleeping in or going to the lake or playing golf is more important than going to Sunday school. But, is that all they are saying? Aren’t they also giving these things a higher priority than Jesus Christ? As you close this activity, please take a few minutes to pray for spiritual renewal and revival in your church, in your Sunday school and in your own life, too.
